What is saponification?

Here's the simple definition because who wants ten pages of science?...Saponify simply means "turn into soap".

The term saponification is the name given to the chemical reaction that takes place when a vegetable oil or animal fat is mixed with a strong alkali. ("alkali" in soap making is meaning  sodium hydryoxide (common name: Lye) The end result of these combined products are two: soap and glycerin. Water is also present, but it doesn't enter into the chemical reaction. The water is only a vehicle for the lye/alkali, which is otherwise a dry powder. So, you have your lye liquid mixture and your oils mixture. You combine them together to make soap. Voila! (simple explanation?)

So there you go.... the lye and the oils mix together and chemically, magically,  change into gentle wonderful SOAP!
HOWEVER, this does not happen over night. The whole process of making REAL soap with wonderful glycerin in it (not store bought soap that the glycerin is removed and chemicals added, such as ...well, you know their names) takes 4 to 6 weeks from start to finish. Beautiful wonderful 100% pure organic soap. So, now you know the defintion of saponification. Leave the saponification up to me and relax and enjoy the end result. Your skin will thank you! ....and so will your Smile. :-)
